Scoring

Electronic scoring

Last season Nunawading Basketball introduced a new electronic system to pay team sheet fees, helping to avoid queues as venue doors.  Fees will now be paid using the Teammo app.

Manual scoring instructions

1:   Players numbers and names should be entered in numerical order on team sheet (given name, then surname). The Coach’s name should also be entered.  Failure to do this will incur the Club a fine.

2:   The scorers are an assistant to the referee, so that barracking and questioning of referees decisions is not allowed.

3:   Record points scored on the line next to the relevant players name and number.  Record points scored in the first half under the “First Half” heading in RED pen and those scored in the second half under the “Second Half” heading in BLUE.  The “Extra Time” column is only used for drawn games.

Scores are recorded by recording a “2” or “3” beside the player’s name.

The points should also be recorded on the running score boxes by crossing off each individual box.

4:   For Free Throws, a box is drawn on score line for the player.  For each successful throw, one point is awarded and a diagonal line is drawn through the box. A dot is drawn for each unsuccessful throw.  For each successful throw, one box in the running score box will also be crossed off.

When a foul has been called after a successful basket, (2points have been awarded) “2” is written on that player’s score line, then a circle is drawn to show a bonus free throw.  If the throw is successful, a diagonal line is drawn through the circle.  If unsuccessful, a dot is shown in the circle. If the throw is successful, cross off one box in the running score section.

When a foul has been called on a player shooting from outside the 3 point line, the referee will signal 3 free throws.  Draw a box on the player’s score line, if successful, the first 2 throws are shown by diagonal lines and the 3rd throw by a vertical line through the box.  Dots indicate unsuccessful throws. The appropriate number of boxes on the running score should also be crossed off.

5:   Fouls are recorded in the boxes beside the player’s name and number.

When recording the team fouls, place the player number in the squares marked “team fouls”.  Bench Technical fouls are added to the team fouls.  A bench technical foul can be given to anyone sitting on the players bench.

When a technical foul is to be recorded against the coach, write “coach” at the bottom of the players list and record the fouls as you would a player.

6:   At half time, the referee will check the scoring and mark off and initial the scores and fouls recorded.

7:   After half time, the individual scores and fouls will be entered in the “second half” area of the sheet.  The running score will continue to be entered in the same area, while the team fouls will be entered in the column marked “2nd half”.

8:   Time outs should be recorded by crossing through the appropriate box.

9:   Where a player receives 5 personal fouls, the siren should be sounded and the referee advised, as that player can take no further part in the game.

10: Where a team receives a total of 8 team fouls in any half, the siren should be sounded and the referee advised, as subsequent fouls can result in 2 free throws if the team fouled against has control of the ball.

11:           In the last 2 minutes of the 2nd half, the clock is stopped for every whistle.  The time keeper must stop the clock immediately as the referee blows the whistle.  The clock does not start until the ball actually touches a player on the court.

When free throws are taken, the clock starts when a player touches the ball after the shots.  This can be the rebounder if the last shot is not successful, or after the ball has been thrown in if the shots are successful
